Stuggles of Eating on the Road

Spring Break, a long weekend to mess around with the family.  We decided to pack up for the tail end and head over to the big city.  I was pretty excited because this Seattle suburb I thought is pretty into “green” and “organic”.  They have a Whole Foods Market, Trader Joes and PCC Natural Market.  My excitement, however, was a bit deflated when we tried to go out and get some good vegetarian grub.  I’m sure it exists here, but it certainly wasn’t easy to find.  We were right back to where we always are.  Where do we go to eat when we can’t (or don’t want to) eat in?

Upon Internet searches, we get results like Subway, Thai food, pizza or Mexican.  But what about an actually healthy, vegetarian or vegan place?  Well, we decided to head out on foot and see what we could find, this area is loaded with restaurants.  Not a great idea, especially at 7pm on a Friday night with starving kids.  The only place we could get a table in a reasonable amount of time was Red Robin.  Well, I can tell you, it is pretty hard to find something healthy, vegetarian or not, on that menu.  Sadly, I was starving too and gave in to the frustrations of looking over and over the menu only to find a soup or a salad that you would still have to modify and just said, to heck with it…I’m eating a burger! Needless to say, Ughhh, I felt so terrible afterward, I wished I had just picked the awful salad.  But why does eating out have to be so hard?

We ran into the same dilemma over and over, everywhere we went it was a struggle to find something that fit our standards of healthy vegetarian fare.  The bits of cheating here and there over this holiday weekend has left me feeling a bit bloated and blah…My goal over the next several weeks is to do some research about helpful websites and links on eating out and bring them to you to share.  Please feel free to leave comments with your tips, tricks and suggestions too!
